Earnhardt Jr. voices uncertainty about foundation, confidence at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the final driver to appear in the print media area at Thursday’s NASCAR media day, but he was worth the wait.Earnhardt Jr. said he doesn't know a lot about the Dale Earnhardt Foundation, started by his stepmother, Teresa, after Earnhardt's death in a crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. "I don't really understand everything the foundation does," Earnhardt Jr. said. "I know it plants a lot of trees. ... The foundation is a good thing, if it’s run properly and has the right people running it." Earnhardt Jr. then said he thinks he has "the car to beat" in the 2006 Daytona 500, and predicted that he'll rebound smartly after missing the Chase for the Nextel Cup a year ago. "We’ll be in the top three in points when we get to the Chase," he said. "We’ll win about six or seven races and if we don't win the championship we won't lose it by much."
