Some Cup points contenders dig themselves a deep hole
Nextel Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson was bumped from the pole to the outside or Row 1 when his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon went faster as the last car in Friday's qualifying. Still, Johnson's day went much better than the two drivers closest to him in the current standings.
Greg Biffle, who's won a Nextel Cup circuit-best five races this year - including two of the past three - seemed to be on his way to a good lap Friday before sliding off the track into the grass. The result was that Biffle, who's 49 points behind, will start 41st on Sunday.
Elliott Sadler, who's third in the standings 250 points behind Johnson, spun twice in practice and then spun out again on his qualifying lap. He'll start 42nd Sunday.
