FONTANA, Calif. -- Jeff Gordon might be experiencing a lot of concerns this weekend at California Speedway, but through two practice sessions, sheer speed hasn't been one of them.
Gordon's No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet was fastest Friday evening in the Sony HD 500's opening practice, and he upped the ante in Saturday morning's Happy Hour session, with a best lap in 39.187 seconds, an average speed of 183.734 mph.
"I was a little surprised with the time (Saturday) because I felt like the car was as good as last night -- but I didn't think we could run as fast in the sun," Gordon said. "But we did, we ran great and the car is looking pretty good for the race."
Carl Edwards, who is lined up to make a serious run at the Chase for the Nextel Cup in his first full season in Nextel Cup, was second in Happy Hour in the No. 99 Office Depot Ford, at 182.431 mph.
Gordon's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Kyle Busch rounded out the top-three Saturday in the No. 5 Kellogg's Chevrolet (182.251) -- which means Rick Hendrick's team claimed two of the top three spots in each practice.
