LOUDON, N.H. – Apparently Richard Childress Racing wants to make clear to the media what its driver, Kevin Harvick, has maintained from the beginning:
Harvick will remain with the organization's No. 29 Chevrolet team at least through the completion of his current contract, which expires at the end of the 2006 season.
Friday, RCR released a statement, which read in part: "Kevin Harvick will be back behind the wheel of Richard Childress Racing's No. 29 Chevrolet for the 2006 Nextel Cup Series season."
In an exclusive interview on Aug. 12, Harvick told ThatsRacin.com he had put on hold any further contract negotiations until several performance issues were addressed within the organization.
However, he said then and has stated repeatedly since, he fully intended to complete his contract, regardless of what his future may be at RCR.
"Richard has always fulfilled his commitments, and I have given him my word I would do that for him," Harvick said Aug. 12. "I will fulfill my commitments 100 percent."
Some recent media speculation has indicated Harvick may try to leave early and join another team for 2006. He reiterated again Thursday that was not the case.
"Richard has made key additions to RCR that will benefit the organization," Harvick said. "We are both committed to make 2006 a successful season. I've always intended to fulfill my obligations to Richard, RCR and all of our sponsors."
For the second consecutive season, RCR has failed to place any of its three Nextel Cup teams in the Chase for the Nextel Cup.
Harvick, 29, is 14th in points – the highest of RCR's three drivers. He has five career Cup wins and 15 Busch Series victories, including the 2001 Busch championship.
Harvick, then RCR's Busch Series driver, took over the driving duties of the team of the late Dale Earnhardt, who died in a last-lap wreck in the 2001 Daytona 500.
