Petty Enterprises would love to reel in Bobby Labonte
Let there be no doubt about it. If Bobby Labonte were ready to make a decision on a new home in the Nextel Cup Series, Petty Enterprises is prepared to roll out the red carpet for him.
Labonte has three years remaining on a contract with Joe Gibbs Racing but has been non-committal about his future in recent interviews. He has been rumored for any number of rides, including Chip Ganassi Racing, Petty and Bill Davis Racing.
"If Bobby would commit, I would have signed him a month ago. A driver of that caliber you would sign," said Kyle Petty, CEO of Petty Enterprises. "With the other drivers out there, not that they are not that caliber, but they haven't won races and they haven't won a championship.
"If you can get Robbie Loomis and Bobby Labonte in the same year, (the media) might come by the truck and talk to me again. That would be huge for us. Robbie was a huge catch. To catch two fish would be big for us."
Petty has already signed Loomis, former crew chief for four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon, to head up day-to-day operations at their organization beginning next season.
