While admitting a crew chief change is "a bad thing, it's not great," Nextel Cup driver Carl Edwards said he trusts car owner Jack Roush is making a decision in the best long-term interests of Roush Racing.
On Thursday, the Roush organization announced a personnel shake-up that included sending Edwards' crew chief, Bob Osborne, to the No. 26 Ford team and driver Jamie McMurray. Wally Brown has been named Edwards' new crew chief for his No. 99 Ford Cup team.
"The way Jack put it to me, he said, 'Do you feel like you're a part of something great?' I said, 'Yes, I do, sir,' " Edwards said on Friday at Nashville Superspeedway, site of Saturday's Pepsi 300 NASCAR Busch Series race.
" 'He said, 'How do you think it got that way?' I said, 'Well, you making decisions and running your team like you think it should be run.'
"He said, 'I really believe this will work.'"
"To be extremely clear, this change has nothing to do with Bob's performance or our team's performance. It has to do with getting Jamie going. That's all this is," Edwards said.
"That's something I wanted to make real clear because Bob is doing an unbelievable job."
Edwards said he and Brown would meet with Roush after 90 days to evaluate the change.
"We had a good talk about it, and I think it's going to work," Edwards said.
"I believe it's going to work, and if it doesn't, Jack said Bob would be back."
This season, Edwards is 22nd in Cup points, with two top-10 and two top-five finishes in seven races. He has also finished 36th or worse three times, twice failing to finish due to accidents.
