FOR IMMEDIATE NEWS RELEASE
ROSSBURG, OH (June 10 & 11, 2005) -- Matt Miller’s $100,000 thrill of victory nearly turned into the agony of defeat Saturday night at Eldora Speedway. Miller had just ruled supreme over 144 cars in the 11th annual Dirt Late Model Dream and prior to the mandatory trip to the scales to verify compliance with the minimum weight rule he performed a couple of quick NASCAR style, fuel consuming ‘doughnuts’ on the front stretch.
That is where the drama began.
On Miller’s first attempt across the scale, he weighed in at 2298 pounds, two pounds shy of the 2300 pound minimum required by the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) sanctioning body, who was overseeing the event. As announced in the pre-race driver’s meeting, Miller was allowed to back off the scales one-time and re-weigh. This time the scales tipped up to a visible 2301 pounds, enough to cement the hard fought win.
His earlier post-race antics could very well have burned up one-half a gallon of fuel or approximately four pounds, which could have been ‘insurance’ weight.
Jackie Boggs shot from his pole position at the dropping of the green flag for the century grind, to instantly show that he was the class of the field at that point. Jerry Rice, driving the strongest race of his Eldora career, hung on for second, with Jimmy Mars, Scott Bloomquist and Chris Madden battling behind.
Miller was riding in eighth spot in the early going.
Boggs was steamrolling around the massive one-half mile oval, and by the 16th tour encroached upon lapped traffic. That began to cramp his style and the balance of the field moved in to mount a challenge. As Boggs began the dreaded weave through the slower machines, Donnie Moran suffered a flat tire to bring out the event’s first yellow flag on lap 16. He was able to duck into the pits and get the tired changed before the green flag came back out.
Only one more lap could be completed before the race would be slowed again - this time for a three-car tangle in turn two that was triggered by Madden looping it. In the process, Madden was collected by Delmas Conley and Billy Drake. All three cars suffered enough damage to eliminate them from further Dream action.
Things settled down after the next restart, as Boggs resumed his mastery of the field.
Just prior to the caution, Miller had gotten by Tim McCreadie and Madden to take fifth spot, with Boggs, Rice, Mars and Bloomquist ahead of him.
Things remain pretty much status quo through lap 32 when the yellow was flown once again, this time for a stopped Brandon Kinzer.
On the restart, the huge crowd was stunned as Miller was able to dispose of three-time Dream winner, Scott Bloomquist., to take fourth.
Lost in the focus of Miller’s charge was Darrell Lanigan, who had clocked in as the second-quickest of the 144 cars the previous night. Lanigan had failed to advance through his heat race and had to start in 20th position.
On the lap 32 restart he was lined-up in sixth spot, and just after Miller had disposed of Bloomquist, Lanigan repeated the move to move into fourth.
It would be lap 51 before another caution flag came out. Each time would find Boggs resuming the lead with an elimination of lapped traffic.
The lap 51 restart didn’t offer any change in the running order, but things began to change on lap 55 when Miller got by Rice for second. Two laps later Lanigan did the same and the heat was on Boggs. The top three runners developed quite a battle for the lead, with Miller finally coming out on top on lap 68.
Boggs was able to hold back Lanigan until lap 78 when the engine expired on his machine and he retired to the pit area.
With no further yellow flag periods to slow the pace, Miller was able to hold off Lanigan who was reeling in, but unable to muster the necessary power to prevail.
As the checkered flag flew, Miller cruised ahead of Lanigan, with Bloomquist moving back up to third, Ray Cook in fourth, and Rice in fifth.
With visions of the $100,000 paycheck clearly in his head, Miller’s ‘almost costly’ celebration began.
Rice wasn’t quite as fortunate as Miller. After the strong run, Rice was clearly disappointed after missing the minimum weight by 11 pounds; forcing an erasure of an otherwise fantastic night.
