RICHMOND, Va. - Rookie driver Denny Hamlin cut his left hand during horseplay after a test session at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Wednesday night, but he is not expected to miss any time in his Busch or Nextel Cup cars this weekend.
Hamlin, a Chesterfield native gearing up for his first start at Richmond International Raceway in NASCAR's premier series, suffered the cut while he and his crew members were racing around the team hauler after the test session.
The wound was stitched but Hamlin was unable to attend a promotional appearances scheduled for the morning in Richmond, team spokesman Jon Mason said.
"The guys were having races around the hauler after the test. I thought I'd try for the best lap of the night, and as I was running around the front of the truck, I caught my hand on a sharp piece of chrome," Hamlin was quoted as saying in a release from Joe Gibbs Racing.
"I got all stitched up and I'll be fine to race this weekend."
Hamlin is second among seven rookies in the Nextel Cup Series in points, trailing only Clint Bowyer. Bowyer is 18th overall, 43 points ahead of Hamlin.
Hamlin also is fourth overall in the Busch Series standings.
