Gordon Denied Win by Biffle, Aims Frustration at Schrader
Greg Biffle scored the win in Saturday night’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series event at Darlington by holding off a late run by 4-time Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon. With two laps to go, Biffle leading and Gordon closing, the duo caught Ken Schrader. Schrader yielded to the leaders.
Gordon was unable to catch Biffle and contest for the win and was relegated to a second-place finish. On the cool down lap, Gordon swerved sharply at Schrader and gestured towards him. Many wondered what Gordon’s issue was with Schrader.
"We're coming up to take the white flag, the two leaders are battling, you expect the other lapped cars you come up on to give more room. He did give the 16 plenty of room, but he ran along beside me and the air was pushing me toward the outside wall. That ruined any chance I might have had. But if I hadn't hit the wall earlier that might not have been a factor", Gordon would later explain, "When you're that close to the win, you want it really bad. It's not about needing it, it's about wanting it."
Biffle explained that Gordon’s problems passing Schrader were not Schrader’s fault. That late in the race, "your tires get so worn out, you can't even get out of the way," Biffle said. Biffle added that he doubted Gordon could have passed him for the lead if he had in fact caught him.
As the cars slowly circled the track after the checkered flag flew under the full moon, Gordon’s frustration with his current 15-event winless streak was all too apparent.
