A new NASCAR points system that guarantees Gordon a spot? Jeff's 'all for it'
INDIANAPOLIS – With Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all hanging around the bubble as the Chase for the Nextel Cup approaches in six races, there's talk that NASCAR's plans to tweak the Chase rules might be at least partially related to that.
"If Brian France wants to create a points system so that Tony, Junior or I have a shot at the championship every year, I'm all for it," Gordon joked Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"To me, a points structure is not based around making sure somebody wins it," said Gordon, a four-time Nextel Cup champion. "It's about the best team and driver combination that goes out there and wins it and competes for it. Those are the guys who deserve to be in it."
Gordon is ninth in the current standings, 35 points ahead of Stewart and 50 points ahead of 11th-place Earnhardt Jr.
Gordon is a four-time race winner at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and he has 75 victories in his Nextel Cup career. If he can win Sunday's race, he'd tie Formula One driver Michael Schumacher for the most career wins at Indianapolis with five and the late Dale Earnhardt at 76 on the all-time NASCAR victories list.
