Kurt Busch lost a lot more than a good starting position for the use of an unapproved shock during qualifying last weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
NASCAR on Wednesday fined Busch's crew chief, Roy McCauley, $25,000 and suspended him from all NASCAR competition until Nov. 1 for the use of a right-rear shock absorber that would not compress on Busch's No. 2 Dodge.
In addition, McCauley was placed on probation through Dec. 31, Busch was docked 50 Nextel Cup Series driver points and car owner Roger Penske was penalized 50 owner points for the infraction.
Busch originally qualified third-fastest for the Bank of America 500, but his time was disallowed after the unapproved shock was discovered in post-qualifying inspection.
In other penalties, NASCAR fined crew chief Newt Moore $5,000 for an unapproved carburetor throttle shaft and throttle plate on Scott Wimmer's No. 66 Ford in the Busch Series.
Kevin Caldwell, crew chief for driver Robert Richardson in the Busch Series, was fined $1,000 for having excessive length in the fuel line in his No. 80 Chevrolet.
