WoO Late Model Series drivers tune-up for ‘The Bayou Battle’
NORMAN, Okla. -- In less than two weeks the quest for the Championship resumes when the stars and cars of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series makes their inaugural appearance in the state of Louisiana. Led by current point leader Steve Francis of Ashland, Kentucky and defending champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas the race teams of the WoO Late Model Series are tuning up for ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts to be held March 17 at Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker (Baton Rouge), Louisiana and March 18 at Fast Trax Motorplex in Chatham (Monroe), Louisiana. The $10,000 to win - 50 lap feature races boast $45,000 purses and will be a match up of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series versus the SUPR (Southern United Professional Racing) Late Model Series. The U.M.P. Modifieds will also be on the racing card at both venues.
Sitting in idle since the February season opening events in Georgia and Florida a few of the World of Outlaws Late Model race teams shook off the cobwebs this past week end tuning up for ‘The Bayou Battle’. Francis drove the MOPAR Performance Parts/ Valvoline/Freeport Recycling Center No. 15 Steve Francis Racing Rocket Chassis/Stanton-MOPAR/Dodge Charger to a flag to flag $10,000 win Saturday at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway. Moyer raced the J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour No. 21 Billy Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power Racing/Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a fifth place finish at KLMS.
Clint Smith of Senoia, Georgia nailed a top 10 finish at KLMS scoring an eighth place finish driving the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Smith-Passmore Racing GRT Race Cars/RaceTek Engines/Pontiac GTO. ‘Cat Daddy’ made it a double dip this past week end making the long tow to Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina following the Saturday KLMS event. Smith mustered a twelfth place finish in the $10,000 to win event at Cherokee Speedway.
Suffering problems during the main event at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway kept John Blankenship of Williamson, West Virginia from parlaying a heat race win into a good finish. Blankenship place nineteenth driving the Busch Beer/Walker CAT No. 23 Team 23,Inc. Rocket Chassis/Pro Power Racing Ford Taurus. Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Georgia had plans to compete in the event at KLMS but preparations for a Dale McDowell-Ray Cook Driving School class session kept ‘Mac Daddy’ in the class room rather than on the race track.
Rick Eckert of York, Pennsylvania was hoping to get some seat time this past week end by competing in a 600cc Micro Sprint at Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, Pennsylvania. However inclement weather nixed those plans.
With one more week end open before ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts several of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will take the opportunity to tune up before traveling to Louisana.
Eckert will be busy this coming week end driving a late model for California car owner Jim Briggs Thursday and Friday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway dirt track in Nevada before traveling to Bakersfield, California Saturday. The dirt Late Model races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway are part of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series events at the state of the art facility.
Smith plans to race at Columbus Speedway in Mississippi while McDowell and Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Georgia both have plans to race at North Georgia Speedway.
The open week end for the other World of Outlaws Late Model Series race teams means a last chance to tune up for ‘The Bayou Battle’ by finishing up the never ending maintenance required for the wars of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Whether it’s tuning up the driver skills on the race track or tuning up the equipment in the shop one thing is certain. In less than two weeks ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts will be here. And, both driver and machine need to be tuned up.
