WoO Late Model Series ready for this weekend's ‘The Bayou Battle'
NORMAN, Okla. -- With nearly a one month break since last competing the stars and cars of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series are more than ready to get the campaign back underway. That will happen when ‘The Bayou Battle 50’s’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts unfolds Friday at Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker (Baton Rouge), Louisiana and Saturday at Fast Trax Motorplex in Chatham (Monroe) Louisiana. The twin $45,000 events pay $10,000 to the winner matching the World of Outlaws Late Model Series versus the SUPR Late Model Series.
Every point earned is crucial for a driver to have a chance at the 2006 WoO Late Model Series Championship. Both events, though early in the campaign, will be vital for drivers to stay in the hunt for the championship as evidenced by the tight point standings.
Current WoO Late Model Series Championship points leader Steve Francis of Ashland, Kentucky holds a slim 14 point margin over Locust Grove, Georgia hotshoe Shane Clanton entering Round 1 of ‘The Bayou Battle’. Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas, the defending WoO Late Model Series Champion, sits third in points entering the Baton Rouge Raceway event only 20 points behind Francis. Tim McCreadie of Watertown, New York sits fourth in the standings 22 points behind Francis and Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Georgia is fifth only 38 points behind the leader.
Not only are the top 5 in WoO Late Model Series Championship points tight it’s the same back through the standings. The second five is led by Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pennsylvania who sits 40 points out of first but only 57 points from the 14th position in the WoO Late Model Series Championship.
Several World of Outlaws Late Model Series drivers honed their skills this past week end. Having the most success were veteran Clint Smith and ‘Rookie of the Year’ candidate Garrett Durrett as both drivers nailed down wins.
Smith, of Senoia, Georgia, drove the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Smith-Passmore Racing GRT Race Cars/RaceTek Engines Pontiac GTO to a thrilling victory Saturday at North Georgia Speedway. Durrett, of Simsboro. Louisiana and the current WoO Late Model Series ‘Rookie of the Year’ point leader, piloted the Garrett Racing/ Davison Transport No. 58C Team G MasterSbilt Race Cars/Pro Power Racing Ford Fusion to a victory Saturday at Champion Park in his homestate.
Also competing at North Georgia Speedway were McCreadie - 2nd, John Blankenship of Williamson, West Virginia – 11th, Clanton – 17th and McDowell – 20th.
Billy Moyer ventured to Columbus Speedway failing to qualify for Friday’s main event but rebounded Saturday with a sold 5th place finish.
Rick Eckert of York, Pennsylvania headed to the dirt track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway scoring a 5th Thursday and an 11th Friday. Eric Jacobsen of Santa Cruz, California struggled at LVMS failing to qualify for the Friday show. Both Eckert and Jacobsen planned to compete at Bakersfield Speedway in California Saturday and Sunday but inclement weather canceled those events.
Nearly 30 days since the last World of Outlaws Late Model Series event. A tight championship points race. A first time ever appearance in Louisiana. Two facilities that are unfamiliar ground to the majority of the drivers and race teams. All the ingredients for an edge of your seat, heart pounding night of World of Outlaws Late Model Series action. The preparations whether done in the shop or at the track will be put the test Friday and Saturday. Better be ready.
