MBV Motorsports and co-owner Valvoline are working on an amicable split that would allow the owners of MB2 Motorsports to buy out Valvoline’s ownership in the organization’s No. 10 Chevrolets.
Vavoline, one of the more recognizable sponsors in motorsports, bought into the No. 10 team in 2000 and the team took on the name MBV Motorsports. The team currently fields driver Scott Riggs in the Nextel Cup Series.
MB2, majority-owned by Nelson Bowers, runs the No. 01 Chevrolets driven by Joe Nemechek. The team is expected to take over full ownership of the No. 10 by next season, sources confirmed.
The buyout would also entail a search for a new full-time sponsor for the team for the 2006 season.
The organization also fields a limited scheduled with Boris Said in the No. 36 Chevys as part of the MB Sutton team, with part owner Robert Sutton, CEO of sponsor Centrix Financial.
Valvoline is expected to remain involved in the Nextel Cup series, likely moving back into a more traditional sponsorship role with another team.
This week, MB2/MBV announced changes in personnel, including a new crew chief for Riggs. Team general manager Jay Frye said Friday the organization was still working to re-sign Riggs, whose original two-year contract is up at the end of the year.
