Volusia victory for Horton opens up 35th Winternationals in Florida
BARBERVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Winternationals veteran Jimmy Horton ushered in the new era of track ownership for DIRT MotorSports at Volusia Speedway Park on Wednesday night as he captured opening round honors in the 30-lap Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series main. Just one yellow flag slowed the short track action allowing Horton to cruise home in a time of 12 minutes 9 seconds for an average speed of 74.019 mph.
"We've always run good here through the years and there's no better way to start out any season then by winning the first race," said Horton, 49, following his fifth victory in the popular Sunshine State series for Northeastern teams, his latest worth $2,000. The last win in gator country for the Neshanic Station, N.J. star was registered in the 1999 opener, which carried him to his second career Florida Tour points crown. "Now we'll just have to stick around for a few more days and go for another championship."
Five qualifying heats reduced the record-shattering 52-car field to 26 starters for the 15-mile big-block finale. Horton chased winner Dale Planck across the line in the first preliminary race to start sixth before pole-sitter Planck led the initial circuit of the feature after easily out-dragging front row partner and reigning Mr. DIRT Modified titlist Tim Fuller.
Defending Florida Tour Modified co-champions Brett Hearn and Andy Bachetti each won their heat yet it was Hearn able to blast to the front first, charging from fourth to first after just two laps around the fast VSP half-mile clay oval. With five laps complete, Hearn forged a commanding 10-car length advantage while runner-up Planck and Horton searched for a faster way around. The break both drivers needed came following the only caution period of the race on lap nine when Rick Laubach and Bobby Varin tangled coming out of turn four.
While the field paraded under the yellow flag, Hearn suddenly ducked pitside as overheating problems sidelined the no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Madsen Motorsports mount for the remainder of the race. Despite Planck restarting on the point, Horton sped past on the high side and never looked back en route to his 79th career DIRT big-block Modified feature win.
"I expected the track to get a lot rougher although we were able to stay away from the hard compound and use soft tires all night," said Horton, the 1986 Winternationals points king who scored his first Florida Tour Modified victory at Volusia in 1986. "We only changed the tire stagger a little bit for the feature and just waited for the track to come to us. It's my wife's birthday today and this is a great present. I also have to thank all the fans for their support, the (cold) conditions have been pretty tough even for all the northerners this week."
The final 20 laps were run non-stop and when the checkered flag finally waved it was Horton steering the no. 42 Millennium Car Wash-Grosso Trucking/Bicknell machine to a comfortable half straightaway victory ahead of Vic Coffey and Fuller, both of which have already logged plenty of track time at Volusia in their full-fender Late Model entries. Planck and Bachetti filled out the front-five while 13th-place finisher Pat Ward was the last to complete the entire 30-lap feature race distance.
"At first I felt kinda bad not knowing who the 42 car was after it just drove right away from me," said eighth-place starter Coffey, 34, who diced back and forth the second half of the race wheeling around his no. 32c Sweeteners Plus/Bicknell entry before edging Fuller at the line to secure runner-up honors. "When I found out it was Jimmy I thought 'hey, that's not too bad anymore.' Going side-by-side with Tim for so many laps kept us locked in our own little battle and Jimmy just got away from us at the end."
Rounding out the top-10 at the stripe were 17th-place starter Billy Decker, heat two winner Tom Sears, Jr., winter tour regular J.R. Heffner, Central New Yorker Jimmy Phelps and New Jersey driver Wade Hendrickson in his first Florida Tour appearance since DIRT's return to Volusia County in 1998.
Horton leads the ground-pounding Advance Auto Parts Modifieds back to Volusia for two more regular programs on Thursday and Friday before DIRT NorthEast's big-block stars battle in the fourth and final round on Saturday as a $5,000-to-win 50-lap championship event determines the 2006 Florida Tour Winternationals points champion.
SKIDMARKS
The Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series portion of the DIRT MotorSports doubleheader went off like clockwork with practice, heat and consolation races plus the feature completed in less than an hour. Just four cautions slowed the five heats that finished in 25 minutes. Chic Chandler was the lone driver failing to make the starting grid in the qualifiers after his no. 27m New England Disposal Technologies-Atlantic Coast Trailer/Bicknell car lost a radiator hose in the pits which sent hot fluid spitting onto the motor with a small fire resulting. Big-block rookie Joe Isabell, 16, took his first green flag in the fifth and final heat yet lasted less than a straightaway when the right front axle sheered off to send his no. 6j JIR Motorsports-A&D Structures/Bicknell machine careening into the front cement wall to end his night on the hook....
The expected addition of J.R. Heffner and Ted DeGroat along with surprise visits by Brian McDonald, Donnie Elliott and Jim Passino ballooned the record-setting Florida Tour total to 55 drivers for the '06 edition. McDonald drove the back-up no. 73x East End Auto Parts & Construction/Bicknell ride, Elliott got seat time aboard Oscar Boria's OB's numbered TEO machine while Passino signed in with the same no. 4 TEO car driven by Andy Bachetti in 2005. "I just picked up the car three weeks ago and didn't have time to paint it orange," said Passino, 41, once a crewman with Eastern New York Modified legend Jack Johnson who remains notorious for his orange no. 12a open-wheel entries. Passino currently resides in Groveland, Fla. after relocating down south from Schenectady, N.Y. 20 years earlier. "I worked on cars for a long time and it was always a dream to finally drive one myself. In Florida I've run mostly on asphalt but dirt is where I've wanted to go for a long time and now I'm finally getting the chance."
Bob Dini, Chief of Technical Operations for DIRT MotorSports NorthEast has served pitside over the past two days. On practice day the primary area of concern was with safety while issues of both safety and legality took precedence when laps counted most. "All the regular tour drivers were pretty close with their cars and only a few minor adjustments had to be made with the newcomers," said Dini, who made his debut as DIRT NE's head technician exactly one year ago at VSP. "Small things like door posts and spoiler heights were easy to change so overall it's been a very good start to the season in the rules department."
After wadding up his full-fender Sweeteners Plus Late Model in Wednesday night competition, Vic Coffey will now put all his attention on the open-wheel no. 32c Modified for the duration of the week. The Eckerd 200 champion at Super DIRT Week '02 in Syracuse charged from eighth to second to settle for runner-up laurels behind Horton in the Florida Tour opener and will try to improve one more position by the weekend.
Introducing ..... Ryan Jacobs and Tim Kerr. Every year a number of first-time travelers sign up to make the big haul south to Florida in February. The 35th edition of the Winternationals was no different as well over a dozen Race Weeks 'rookies' helped comprise the biggest open-wheel field in the tour's 22-year history. Without sharing any direct bloodlines, Jacobs' first involvement came with 358-Modified drivers Kyle Jacobs and Al Jacobs at Frogtown Int'l Speedway in his Hogansburg, N.Y. hometown. Now 25, Ryan earned a degree in Auto Mechanics from Canton College near Potsdam (NY) and focused on engine work once he arrived at the track. He competed in handful of events at Frogtown in 2004 and this season marks his second full year on the DIRT NE circuit. His current plans include tackling every Advance Auto Parts Modified SDS show ---beginning with the '06 lid-lifter at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway on March 25--- with his no. 73 East End Auto Parts & Construction/Bicknell machine while running Brewerton Speedway (Fri.) and Can-Am Motorsports Park (Sat.) during the summer months.
Hailing from Picton, Ontario, Canada, 20 year-old Kerr has outlined an ambitious 2006 schedule back up north filled with regular weekend trips to Brockville Ontario (Sat.) and Cornwall Motor (Sun.) speedways, along with a number of small-block specials in New York State at Thunder Alley Speedpark, Can-Am and Fulton Speedway. Piloting a Canadian Modified ---equivalent to the UMP-style Modified class in the states--- for the past two seasons at Brighton (Ont.) Speedway, Kerr began his oval-track career steering a full-fender Pro Stocker at the same dirt track. Aside from gaining valuable seat time in '06 a top priority is landing a team sponsor to keep his no. 20 Hubert Kerr Construction/Bicknell mount afloat throughout the upcoming season.
Tans have been hard to come by so far as unseasonably cold temperatures have forced the common use of winter jackets and ski caps throughout much of the early February race programs in Florida. According to Volusia's Director of Marketing Madge Logan Moses, the last time conditions were this uncomfortable was during the Florida Tour staged in 1984.
The first of two autograph sessions that includes a number of Advance Auto Parts Modified drivers is slated for Volusia on Feb. 16. Members of the media, sponsors and promoters will first convene in the afternoon outside turn four of the speedway for a meet and greet gathering before making themselves available for one hour of signing to the race fans at the same hospitality tent beginning at 4:30 p.m. Drivers expected to participate are Tim Fuller, Brett Hearn, Billy Decker, Pat Ward, Alan Johnson, Jimmy Phelps, Danny Johnson and Andy Bachetti. Open to the public, a unique Kart Clash involving some of the same drivers, along with media and race officials, will kick off activity at 2 o'clock on Feb. 18 with the final autograph session conducted until 5 p.m.
